Simple Habits to Affirm Your Child

(an excerpt)

So, what does it really mean to “affirm your children”? An affirmation is simply a statement of truth that we make about ourselves, other people, the world, activities, etc. Directly affirming our children means making statements of truth (or desired truths) about them to them.

Sounds easy, right? Well, in some ways it is, but often we get swept up in the day to day of life and revert to old habits, so my goal is to help you create new habits. Throughout this article I will ask you to pause and practice. I recommend reading these practice affirmations three times out loud to let them sink in and feel if they are meaningful to you.

So let’s try. Pause and breathe deeply.

Affirmation practice: “I am a great parent.”

How was that? Did you feel confident in the statement? Did it feel genuine? Did you get emotional at all while saying it out loud? However it felt to you—that is okay. The most important thing is that you engage in the practice. This will help you find the affirmations that resonate the most with you. Over time, you will notice that certain affirmations become easier to say. For most parents, it is easier to affirm our children than ourselves, but I encourage you to spend some time on you.

Parenting isn’t easy. Yes, this article is about affirming our children, but if you truly want to make meaningful and lasting changes, you have to start from within.
