Using Art to Express What Words Cannot

As a first-generation immigrant, I tend to experience the world as an amalgamation of different cultures, perspectives, and languages. If you speak more than one language, like me, chances are that you too have learned how to switch between languages and cultural identities based on the social spaces that you interact with. As a Latino, who is also a member of the immigrant community in Nashville, I have noticed something quite interesting about the way in which we communicate with others based on the language being used. Oftentimes, we have an easier time communicating with people who speak the same native language as we do, which I believe can be attributed to the familiarity and ease in which we are able to express our thoughts and feelings fully and accurately.

However, there are times where no amount of words, or languages can fully encompass what we have experienced. I believe this is where our inherent ability to express ourselves through creative outlets comes into play.

 Art making has been an integral part of our collective human experience across generations. We have used it as a tool to tell stories, convey cultural messages, and express our feelings on a myriad of topics. Therefore, it makes sense that art can also play a role in our own healing journeys both in and outside of the therapeutic setting. Mindful art making can lead to self-discovery, relief, fulfillment, and empowerment amongst other benefits. It is also important to acknowledge that making art is all about the process. It allows you to slow down, engage in inner-work, and ground yourself in the present as you tell your story using different mediums.

In my experience with art, I have noticed that some people avoid it because they don’t feel like they are good at it. I encourage you to challenge that worry by highlighting that art is subjective and skill levels do not matter when you are using it to tell your own story.
